Hair Loss

What causes hair loss? Several factors are related to hair loss, including male sex hormones, genetics, stress, nutritional deficiencies, thyroid problems, and skin disease. It could also be multifactorial in etiology. Diagnosing the underlying cause can be difficult, but if it is any consolation, treatment can be rather simple. I have seen significant improvement in hair growth and density in patients in as little as 4-6 months.

Here are the options I prescribe to my patients:

Topical minoxidil solution 5%:

Apply 1 ml to the scalp twice per day

Finasteride 1 mg taken daily blocks the conversion of testosterone to the more potent form of DHT, thereby lowering hair loss due to the androgenic effect of male hormones.

Tadalafil 5 mg taken daily increases growth factors such as VEGF and PDGF, which are responsible for hair growth. There is limited data to support this, although clinically, it is proving successful.

Is it a good idea to take vitamins and minerals such as vitamin A, vitamin B, vitamin C, vitamin D, vitamin E, iron, selenium, and zinc? Given the role of vitamins and minerals in the hair cycle, large studies are required to determine the effect of specific micronutrient supplementation on hair growth.

As a Primary Care Physician, I acknowledge that wellness starts with making healthy lifestyle choices, but when that fails, I enjoy treating the cause with therapeutics that work.
