How do side effects vary?

Most Common Side Effects:

In clinical trials for each drug, participants commonly experienced side effects such as nausea, diarrhea, constipation, and abdominal pain. These symptoms are usually more intense at the beginning of treatment or when the dosage is increased. However, as your body gets used to the medication, these side effects typically lessen over time.

Less Common Side Effects:

Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) is more likely to occur when GLP-1 drugs are combined with other diabetes medications, such as insulin, that also lower blood sugar.

Additional common side effects are: gallbladder problems, pancreatitis , and allergic reactions.

Potential Side Effects Vary

All of the GLP-1 medications come with a boxed warning about the risk of thyroid cancer. Due to this risk, it is crucial to inform your healthcare provider immediately if you notice a lump in your throat, voice hoarseness, fatigue, or any other unusual symptoms.

Prescription Pills

Qsymia is a prescription medication designed for weight management. It combines two drugs: phentermine, an appetite suppressant, and topiramate, an anticonvulsant that also supports weight loss. Qsymia is intended for adults who are obese or overweight and have weight-related medical issues. It helps reduce appetite and enhances feelings of fullness, aiding weight loss when used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.

Phentermine is a stimulant commonly used to suppress appetite and can also be beneficial for individuals who have difficulty focusing. It works by stimulating the central nervous system (CNS), which increases levels of certain neurotransmitters in the brain. This action helps enhance alertness, concentration, and focus. While the exact mechanism is not fully understood, phentermine's effects on the CNS are believed to reduce hunger and promote a sense of increased energy and mental clarity. This makes it a valuable tool not only for weight management but also for improving cognitive function in some individuals.

Metformin, though primarily prescribed for managing type 2 diabetes, is also used off-label for weight loss in certain cases. It supports weight loss by improving insulin sensitivity, reducing appetite, and decreasing glucose absorption from food. This can result in modest weight loss and help prevent weight gain. Metformin is especially beneficial for individuals with insulin resistance or conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), where weight management is critical. However, it is typically part of a comprehensive weight loss strategy that includes a healthy diet and regular exercise.
